Beauty and the Beast (Danish: Skønheden og udyret) is a 1983 Danish drama film written and directed by Nils Malmros. The film stars Line Arlien-Søborg as a sexually active 16-year-old and Jesper Klein as the father who struggles to accept his daughter's relationships with boys as well as his own jealousy. Malmros, who had worked with the young Arlien-Søborg on his coming-of-age drama, Tree of Knowledge, wrote the role of the daughter specifically for her.[1]
Plot summary
The film follows 16-year-old Kirsten, a confident and curious teenager exploring her emerging sexuality. Her relationships with various boys become a source of tension with her father, a schoolteacher, who finds himself torn between his protective instincts and a growing, uncomfortable jealousy. As their emotional conflict intensifies, the film examines the complexities of adolescence, parental boundaries, and the pain of growing apart. Set in a quiet Danish town, Beauty and the Beast offers a psychologically nuanced portrait of a father-daughter relationship strained by love, independence, and identity.
