This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases, specifically the oxo-acid-lyases, which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is (2S)-2-hydroxy-2-methylbutanedioate pyruvate-lyase (acetate-forming).
