Lomas Bayas is an open pit copper mine located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. More precisely it lies in the inland commune of Sierra Gorda in Antofagasta Region.[1] It lies about 90 km east of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2023 it operated with 1,109 own workers and 3,129 contractors.[1] The mine begun operations in 1998 when it was owned by Falconbridge Limited.[2] The grade of the ores extracted and processed at Lomas Bayas is low (0.27% copper in the 2010s) when compared to the average grade of copper ores extracted in other Chilean mines.[2]
