General elections were held in Liechtenstein on 31 January and 2 February 1986. The result was a victory for the Patriotic Union, which won 8 of the 15 seats in the Landtag. The Progressive Citizens' Party won seven seats, whilst the new Free List was less than 1% short of the 8% electoral threshold and failed to win a seat.[1] Voter turnout was 93.3%.

They were the first elections in which women could vote, as until the passing of a referendum in 1984, suffrage had been limited to men. Emma Eigenmann was the only woman elected, becoming the first female member of the Landtag.[2] They were also the first elections to use campaign posters.[3]

Electoral system

The 15 members of the Landtag were elected by open list proportional representation from two constituencies, Oberland with 9 seats and Unterland with 6 seats. Only parties and lists with more than 8% of the votes cast in each constituency were eligible to win seats in the Landtag.[4] All citizens aged 20 or above were eligible to vote.[1]
