Each Personal Ordinariate, a canonical structure within the Catholic Church, is headed by an ordinary who either a bishop or a senior priest. They were established in accordance with the apostolic constitution "Anglicanorum coetibus" on 4 November 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI in order to enable the groups of faithful from the Anglican and Methodists to join the Catholic Church while preserving elements of their liturgical and spiritual patrimony. As priests of the Ordinariates can be married but Catholic bishops must be celibate, the ordinary may be a non-celibate priest; the first ordinaries of each of the three Ordinariates were married priests.
